Our Mission

We are united in an effort to raise the consciousness of our communities to the fact that severe and persistent mental illness is a medical, neurobiological disease that is not chosen by persons who are ill; to advocate for the needs of people with mental illness; and to support the continuing needs of long-term care for the most seriously disabled in the state of Florida.

Our Vision:

To see the day when there is an end to discrimination against persons with brain disorders.

The Northeast Florida State Hospital (NEFSH) is located in Macclenny, Florida.  The hospital is a proud recipient of the 2000 Governor's Sterling Award.

Our Hospital
Northeast Florida State Hospital (NEFSH) operated by the Department of Children and Families opened in 1959. NEFSH is designed to serve people who suffer from a severe and persistent mental illness whose needs cannot be met in community-based programs, or whose assessed needs require a residential treatment environment with specialized programs and services. Treatment is focused on the personal needs and goals of each individual. The primary purpose of this treatment facility is to provide quality programs and services that promote the successful return of individuals into community living.

The hospital is part of the continuum of mental health care for 33 of Florida’s 67 counties serving Districts 3, 4, 7, 12, 13 and 14 of the State’s Department of Children and Families. NEFSH provides continuous mental health care to approximately one third of Florida’s population.

NEFSH has 633 beds for adults who require long term mental health treatment services.

Our Staff Work

Staff support is provided by the hospital’s Community Relations Department. For more information you may contact them at:

Our Membership

The Friends of NEFSH, Inc. is a vital organization comprised of families and friends of individuals who are or have received treatment at Northeast Florida State Hospital. All of our funds are used for advocacy, support services and the special needs of the individuals receiving services at NEFSH.

Annually, NEFSH is threatened by the Florida Legislature with privatization. Our concern is that the hospital continues as a state operated public institution, a hospital for the people, that is unmatched by privately run facilities.

Every membership, at a cost of $10 per person per year, is vital, as we impact the State’s decision making. Please join us!

Our Objectives

To improve the quality of life of the individuals served at Northeast Florida State Hospital (NEFSH).

To keep legislators aware of the human and economic impact of serious and persistent mental illness, the importance of the services provided by NEFSH, and the financial needs of our hospital.

To monitor hospital services and report observations to management.

To strengthen and enlarge our organization by encouraging more family and friends to join our organization, and to provide current educational materials to families and the community at large.

To strengthen our relationship with surrounding communities, National Alliance for the Mentally Ill-Florida and its affiliate chapters.

To host the Annual Mental Illness Awareness Golf Tournament.

To encourage family members to become involved in relevant hospital committees and events.

Friends of NEFSH, Inc. is a non-profit organization under the 501 (c) (3) designation.  The group is dedicated to increasing awareness of the devastating effects of mental illness through its sponsorship of hospital events and programs and through lobbying efforts.

The purpose of this site is to promote hospital events that are open to the public.  Public events are designed to entertain people of our community and to increase awareness of the devastating effects of mental illness.
